Why they shine
Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value is a family drama about a stage director and the two daughters he estranged himself from, built around a question no trophy can answer: who gets to tell a story that is not your own. Renate Reinsve plays Nora, the actress who comes home; Stellan Skarsgård plays Gustav, the father whose career has collapsed. On 15 March 2026 it became the first Norwegian film ever to win Best International Feature, after six previous Norwegian nominations since 1957, and Norway's first Oscar for a fiction feature. The picture arrived with nine nominations, went home with one, and Trier used his speech to speak for the international community of filmmakers.
