Why they shine
For twenty-three years Christopher Nolan was the most admired director the Academy kept on the shelf, nominated for Memento's screenplay and then for Inception and Dunkirk, losing each time to somebody else. Oppenheimer changed that on 3 March 2024, and the film swept seven Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., plus cinematography, editing and score. Nolan told the room that cinema was a little over a century old and that nobody knows where the journey goes, and he had aimed the film at the mind of the man at the centre of the largest shift in history.
