Why they shine
Michael B. Jordan had never been nominated for an Oscar before 15 March 2026, despite a decade as the most bankable young actor in Hollywood. For Sinners, Ryan Coogler's vampire horror set in the Depression-era Mississippi Delta, he played twins Elijah Smoke Moore and Elias Stack Moore, one drawn to light and one to shadow, and carried the film on a single sustained fever dream of a body. The picture led the Oscars with a record 16 nominations and won four. Jordan took Best Actor on his first nomination, naming Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington and Halle Berry as the Black winners whose shoulders he stood on.
