Why they shine
Jessie Buckley came to Hollywood from an Irish television singing contest and spent seven years being the most admired actress in the room without a statue to show for it. For Chloé Zhao's Hamnet she played Agnes Hathaway, the wife of William Shakespeare, and the quiet devastation of a mother who has just lost her eleven-year-old son. Buckley swept every major award of that season, from the Golden Globes to the BAFTAs, before the Oscar on 15 March 2026 made her the first Irish woman to win Best Actress. It was her second nomination, after Best Supporting Actress for The Lost Daughter.
