Why they shine
Martin Scorsese spent twenty-six years as the Academy's most admired also-ran, nominated for Best Director five times without a win, for Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, Goodfellas, Gangs of New York and The Aviator. The sixth, for The Departed, finally worked on 25 February 2007. The picture is a police procedural about an informer inside the Boston force, remade from the Hong Kong film Infernal Affairs, and it took four Oscars that night, including Best Adapted Screenplay for William Monahan's script. The Best Picture award went to the film's producers rather than to Scorsese, who had been a producer on two earlier Best Picture nominees.
