Why they shine
Autumn Durald Arkapaw has photographed music videos for the Weeknd and Rihanna and shot episodes of Loki, but the fact that now defines her is simpler: on 15 March 2026 she became the first woman ever to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography, and the first Black person and first Filipina to do so. She shot Ryan Coogler's Sinners on IMAX 15-perf and Ultra Panavision 70 stock, the first female director of photography to work in large format, and separated the film's twin brothers into two colour worlds, one lit almost white and the other sunk in red shadow.
