Why they shine
Robert Lewandowski's 2019-20 season is the closest thing the modern game has to a statistical monument. He scored 47 goals in 47 appearances for Bayern Munich, 55 in all competitions, and won the Bundesliga, German Cup, Champions League, European Super Cup and German Super Cup, becoming the first player to top the scoring charts of league, cup and Europe in the same season. The Ballon d'Or that should have followed was cancelled; a year later he finished 33 points behind Messi. He was named The Best FIFA Men's Player in both 2020 and 2021, and has won two European Golden Shoes, with 41 and 35 goals.

Gerd Müller Trophy
2021 · Nov 29, 2021No trophy: France Football cancelled the 2020 Ballon d'Or on 20 July 2020, the only time in the award's 70-year history that no edition was given, because a pandemic-ravaged season could not be judged. Lewandowski had scored 47 goals in 47 matches and won five trophies, and was named The Best FIFA Men's Player on 17 December instead.
Gerd Müller Trophy
2022 · Nov 29, 2021Second place, 33 points adrift: Messi took 613 points to Lewandowski's 580 in a vote of 170 journalists. Lewandowski had scored 53 goals in all competitions for Bayern and was handed a new award, Striker of the Year, at the same ceremony, the closest he came to the trophy France Football had already cancelled the year before.

Messi, on 30, and Ronaldo, on 29, finished behind him, and it was the first Golden Shoe for a Polish player.
